Isn't it crazy to think that we're only a few short months away from Record Store Day 2021? I feel like we just finished last years not that long ago, and in truth we really did. It all started when the coronavirus hit us hard and the pandemic waylaid everything. RSD 2020 seemed so close and yet so far away, but it did come after being pushed back twice and then divided into 3 drops in August, September, and October not to mention RSD Black Friday which may as well been considered drop 4. And there were quite a few big releases that made each drop worthwhile going to, but overall I think it may have just been too much over too many days. But hey, I'm an RSD vet and just used to it being a certain way.
Obviously that just wasn't possible with everything going on, but I still wish it was different.
That brings me to this year, however, and things are looking a little bit more up than last. We're still getting drops, but only 2 instead of the 3 from 2020. And I am super excited about it. Honestly, there are so many possibilities of what could be released this year. First Releases, Special Releases, and Represses of those Out Of Print grails that almost everyone will be looking for.
At this time, there is no current list of confirmed releases, so what I want to do is discuss and make predictions of our own of what we might see based only on speculation, a wishlist, and a dream. So here is a list of releases I would love to see come out at this years RSD drops. And I would love to hear what's on your wishlist too. So PLEASE at the end of this blog, drop a comment for what you want to see at RSD 2021 and don't forget to hashtag TasteVinyl and RecordStoreDay2021.
For this year, I have picked 9 off of my wishlist that I would love to see get pressed or get repressed. I'll tell you what they are and why I think you may see them this year for Record Store Day.
Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion 2: Ok, so this one probably isn't really on anyone's radar because well let's face it, it's been pressed and repressed multiple times over the years. It's a phenomenal album, and this year will mark the 30th year anniversary of its original release. I just think it's time for there to be some special release for it. It's only ever been pressed on black wax in the US from what I could find and I think it would be cool to see it be pressed on blue/purple to go along with the jacket color scheme)
Swingers - OST: While this has no attachment to the year 2021, I do think it's about time to finally press this on vinyl. Honestly, almost everything else is getting pressed from the 90's and I think this would be a huge seller. Fans of the film and collectors of vinyl have been making it known for years that they would like to see this great film soundtrack finally come to an analog format.
Toadies - Hell Below Stars Above: For any Toadies fan out there, this is one album that is a must to press. Why you ask?! Because this album has never been pressed on vinyl ever. I love their album Rubberneck and already have the MOV pressing of it from several years ago, but Hell Below Stars Above is like the dark sequel that should have been pressed to wax 20 years ago, but alas it has not. Hopefully this is one on someone's radar to be pressed. If not at RSD, then when?! Plus, it's also the 20th Anniversary of the release so there's that too.
Hook - OST: Ok, so probably not on a whole lot of people's minds when it comes to vinyl to see at a RSD release, but this has never been released on vinyl in the US. First of all it's my favorite version of the Peter Pan story, and Robin Williams (RIP) did one hell of a job, and not to mention Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, but I digress. The soundtrack for this film is just delightful, and one that I think would be amazing to hear on vinyl. I don't at all expect it, but I would like it.
Alkaline Trio - From Here To Infirmary: So this is one that has been pressed a few times for sure, but that doesn't mean it can't be pressed again. What better way to celebrate one of the greatest Pop punk/Emo albums of all time than to make a super limited RSD edition for the 20th Anniversary. This will probably get pressed again this year, but just a matter of who does it and when.
The Rocketeer - OST: If you've never seen The Rocketeer before please "Get On That!" I think this is one of Disney's most under rated films. Love the movie and absolutely love the soundtrack. And if you haven't noticed the pattern yet I tend to look for a bunch that have not yet been pressed on vinyl. This is another one of them. Never been pressed anywhere in the world, and dammit it's about time it got the pressing it deserves. Would love to see this get pressed on golden marble or gold with brown splatter.
Powerman 5000 - Tonight The Stars Revolt: The pattern continues. For the past decade or so releases and represses of 90's and early 2000's era albums has been at the forefront of modern vinyl collectors minds. Getting their hands on all of those nostalgic albums that have either never been pressed or have only been pressed once. This my friends falls into the never-been-pressed category. For me, this is the holiest of grails hands down and I'll tell you why. Powerman 5000 made a bunch of albums, but this was their absolute pinnacle achievement. Even in the Nu-Metal genre nothing like this ever got made. I mean, it's basically Rob Zombie meets a B Space Horror flick, and it's pure gold. It would be a one amazingly unique pressing. We just need it pressed once, and after that it's every man for themselves.
Slowdive - Just For a Day: For early shoegaze/dream pop fans, this album is a must have. Straight out of the UK shoegaze goodness. Now this album has been pressed on vinyl before, but not in the US, which I think is a shame. It's the 30th Anniversary of this album, and it's just about time we saw a vinyl pressing of it here in the US. Will we get one?! Probably not, but it's fun to dream.
Good Charlotte - Young & Hopeless: Last but not least is Good Charlotte. Yeah, it's been pressed already, and pressed within the past several years, but they just didn't make enough of them. I would very much like to have this album on wax if only for nostalgic purposes. It was perfect for the pop punk era, and it still holds up pretty well. I still listen to a bunch of the songs off this album, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. With it almost being the 20th Anniversary a cool edition of this would be terrific. I could see them doing this actually, but just maybe not this year.
